Sharing Hope and New Life

January 30, 2023
Everyone experiences roadblocks in their lives. Whether it be from a tragedy or just a difficult circumstance, we often find ourselves wondering where the rainbow is. The truth is that there are rainbows right in front of us that we cannot see until the storm clears. But, this was not the case for one of our residents, Mr. Ricker.

Here at Maria Joseph Health & Rehabilitation, we consider it a privilege to establish relationships with our residents and their families. Arvin Ricker lives on Brunner 4 on our campus and has resided with us since January 29, 2020. Mr. Ricker is originally from Detroit, Michigan, but spent 30 years of his life in Kentucky. When asked how he made a living, he states he has always loved working with his hands. Mr. Ricker became a master welder earlier in life and made motorcycle casings. Years later, he suffered a stroke that left him without the use of his right side. Needing more assistance with his daily care, he now calls Maria Joseph home.

When the Covid pandemic hit, Mr. Ricker began going outside to collect branches from dead trees and find random rocks. With these items, he began to make, "Trees of Life." He feels that repurposing the branches of those dead trees gives them a new "life." He shares the trees he creates with people he meets throughout the campus. The bell he adds is a symbol meant to help anyone that may have anxiety.

Mr. Ricker has enjoyed his time with us and is very involved in activities. He enjoys painting, listening to music and chatting with staff and friends he has made here. Although Mr. Ricker has had some hurdles in life, he still pushes through to somehow inspire others. We look at Mr. Ricker's story as inspiration to keep going and find the rainbow past the storm. No matter what you’re going through, even at the darkest times of your life, you can always find your rainbow.
